Nature's Oracles: An Afternoon of Art, Poetry, and Nature-inspired Divination
Nature’s Oracles is a hybrid visual art and poetry event that takes place in the studio and in the outdoor spaces surrounding it. Mack Rovenolt is the main featured artist whose work will be displayed in the largest room of the studio, Susan Eschbach and Jennilie Brewster will have their work displayed in the smaller adjoining room. There will be handmade interactive stations for people to wander to and play with divination practices inspired by nature and ancient Celtic traditions. At the last hour or so of the event, there will be a spoken word performance held outside. The secondary readers are: Mack Rovenolt, Susan Eschbach, georgianna Van Gunten, Jennilie Brewster and the features of the spoken word performance are:
Mariah Smith, Keyturah Moore, and Desoni Cooper.
There will be visual arts and crafts for sale, a silent garage sale to support the studio, snacks and drinks, and we encourage BYOB
Artists and Poets Involved:
Mariah Smith: Mariah is a poet and advocate from Jackson, Michigan, and a Master of Public Administration candidate at Cornell University. Her work sits at the intersection of policy, poetry, and visual storytelling. Rooted in Midwest resilience and shaped by academic rigor, she uses language as both witness and weapon — documenting moments of solitude, connection, and collective liberation.
Through her writing and performance, Mariah explores how storytelling can move communities, influence systems, and reimagine freedom.
Jennilie Brewster is an artist who works in various forms and in community, often exploring connections between our inner and outer landscapes. Her paintings and installations have been shown widely. Her essays have appeared on Catapult and the Rumpus. She founded the disability justice-and-arts organization OPEN DOORS NYC and produced the award-winning documentary film Fire Through Dry Grass.
Mack Rovenolt is a local journalist, poet, and artist with a focus on printmaking and collage, though they enjoy learning new art forms and techniques. Both their art and poetry center on nature motifs and they draw inspiration from the physical and spiritual world around them. Their pets also make frequent appearances in their work. Mack has previously been featured in two galleries: print art featured in the Generating Joy Show at the Cherry with Ithaca Generator, and collage work featured in Queer Visions Queer Voices June 2025 at the CAP Artspace. Their work can be found at MRoven Prints on Instagram.
georgianna Van Gunten is a visual artist, poet and founding hedge witch at ithaca writing studio.
Desoni Cooper: Hello, my name is Desoni Cooper. I’m a recent Ithaca College graduate with a degree in Documentary Studies and Production. I’m a filmmaker, poet, and songwriter who uses art to shine light on social issues and uplift marginalized voices through storytelling. I hope this space encourages expression, healing, and the freedom to create from the heart.
Keyturah Moore is a creative writer, lyricist, and amateur film maker living in Ithaca, NY. She has supported the literary community by creating and hosting poetry events in Tompkins County as well as designing a workshop for Spring Writes Literary Festival. She has a self-published chapbook of poetry titled Broken Words which is available for purchase. Passion Behind the Pen Productions is Keyturah Moore’s creation that bridges the gap between poetry workshops, events, and other literary endeavors within the community. A special thank you to CAP for awarding Moore a Community Artist Grant for her workshop series to be a highlight of Spring Writes in 2025.
Susan Eschbach: I am the salt marsh trail's robust blackberries thicketful
the soaring redwood and lush green fern
the thrumming flap of crow and wild golden field waving
and a fire, a storm, a pirate, a poet, a mom, a teacher, a lover,
awash in color and awe.
